What Are Early Orthodontics?

There are two main stages of orthodontics, known as Phase 1 and Phase 2 treatments. Early orthodontics usually consists of Phase 1 treatments, which may include spacers, a palate expander, or other appliances to prepare a young person for braces or clear aligners. Our team will carefully monitor your child to determine if the development of their bite indicates they qualify for orthodontics and share the results and recommendations for their custom treatment plan.

What Treatments Qualify as Orthodontics?

When you or a loved one begins the orthodontic process, you may wonder what qualifies as an orthodontic treatment versus a dental service. We create a custom treatment plan that is tailored to your unique needs and smile goals, and our team works together so you can enjoy optimal oral health and a straight smile. Our friendly orthodontist will perform the services that are part of your treatment plan. Here are some of the services that are considered orthodontic treatments:

  • Spacers: We place these slender appliances to maintain proper spacing as your child's permanent teeth come in.
  • Expanders: Palate expanders are appliances that gently reshape a palate that is too small or narrow.
  • Extractions: We may perform an extraction to create proper spacing in your dental arch or to create the necessary room for your child's permanent teeth to erupt.
  • Braces: Traditional braces consist of brackets and an archwire to guide teeth to optimal spacing.
  • Invisalign® Clear Aligners: These clear trays are completely removable and discreetly shift teeth into new positions.
  • Retainers: Retainers are necessary because they maintain your newly straightened smile by keeping your teeth in the correct positions.

Orthodontics FAQs

Improving the aesthetics of your smile with orthodontic treatments is a complex journey, and it's normal to have questions. We encourage you to share your concerns and questions, and we're happy to provide the answers and resources you need to make an informed decision. Here are some of the most common questions we receive about orthodontic treatments.

Do traditional braces hurt?

The brackets and wires may cause some pressure or discomfort when first applied or when the wire is tensioned, but it will subside within 2-3 days on average, and you can take over-the-counter pain medication as needed. If you are in pain or have a broken bracket or wire, contact our office immediately, and we will schedule an appointment as soon as possible to address the problem and get you out of pain.

No. Clear aligners are completely removable, so you don't have to give up any of your favorite foods or drinks during treatment. You will simply remove the clear trays, enjoy your meal, brush your teeth, clean the trays, and put the aligners back in. It's important to remove the clear trays before a meal because the force of chewing will damage the aligners and liquids can stain the plastic.

Your treatment timeline is determined by the severity of your malocclusion or bite misalignment. In general, Invisalign clear aligners treatment runs anywhere from 6-36 months, with most patients averaging between 12-18 months.
